Shot on Harman Phoenix II 200, 35mm; Nikon F55. This piece was prompted by meeting a master craftsman of clay affectionately referred to as Uncle Costas in Paphos, Cyprus. His was a story of resilience and perseverance in the face of refugeeism from Turkish occupation, grief of a lifelong partner followed by the loss and then rediscovery of artistic impulse as a mechanism for survival and continuance. His perspective is mirrored in his decades long practice of earth craft: “You must be the boss of the clay, not the other way around. But be a gentle boss.” I was captivated by the sinuous, steady grace of Uncle Costas’ practice, and the emergence of form in his hands. That is what I foremost hoped to capture.
